Psychiatrists & Psychologists
General Information
Psychiatrist
Psychiatrists are medical physicians that specialize in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of mental illnesses. They are uniquely qualified to assess both the physical and mental aspects of psychological disturbances. Their medical education assists them to make an accurate and complete diagnosis and recommend or provide treatment for their clients.
Of all mental health providers, only psychiatrists are fully licensed medical doctors that are able order or perform a full range of medical laboratory and psychological tests. Their clinical experience helps them understand the complex relationship between emotional and medical illness, evaluate data, make a diagnosis and develop a treatment strategy. Psychiatrists employ a wide range of treatments that may include various forms of psychotherapy, medication and hospitalization when necessary.
Psychologist
A psychologist is a professional that studies how we think, feel and behave from a scientific point of view and applies the knowledge to help people explain, understand and change their behaviours. Psychologists provide services in schools, private practices, health clinics, hospitals, businesses, social welfare agencies, jails, courts, rehabilitation centres and other settings. Services are provided in the private sector as well as by governments. Provincial and territorial governments are responsible for public psychological services and the regulation of the field.
Some psychologists work predominantly as faculty and researchers at universities and at governmental and non-governmental organizations while others work primarily as practitioners in hospitals, clinics, schools and private offices. Many psychologist are active in both research and practice settings.
There are a wide variety of topics upon which a psychologist may focus his research and practice, including: mental health problems, brain injury, cognitive functioning, behavioural and emotional functioning, addiction, court consultation, marital and family relationships and social and cultural behaviours and attitudes.
